U.S Commerce department loses 17 laptops a month?

September 22nd, 2006 Posted by D Webber

According to statements made by U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez, that department has lost 1,137 laptops since 2001. That’s out of more than 30,000 in use during that period.

So if we assume the numbers include all of 2001 and up to the first six months of 2006 (5.5 years), on average that’s 206.7 laptops lost per year and 17.2 per month. I wonder what the averages are for private sector organizations.

Issues of breaches of sensitive information aside, the economic impact and logistics of losing so many must interesting. Does the department have full time staff dedicated just to processing reports of stolen equipment? Do they keep inventories on hand so replacements can be handed out quickly? There are so many things to wonder about with loss rates this high.
