Snort vendor sourcefire files for IPO
As many speculated earlier this year, Sourcefire the developer of the popular open source Snort intrusion detection software has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering.
The official press release from Sourcefire is here and a short blurb from the Washington Business Journal is here.
Last last year Checkpoint attempted to buy Sourcefire but unfortunately they did it right at the time the Dubai Ports deal was scaring the U.S. about foreign ownership. Checkpoint is base in Israel, like many other security vendors (e.g. Aladdin, Finjan). Faced with growing political opposition, Checkpoint abandoned the attempt last March.
It’s great to see an open source company succeed commercially. This IPO may just be a strategy to make the company more attractive for another acquisition, but however it goes lets hope they will continue developing the excellent open source Snort IDS.
